Monday 17th July

Travel day to Gili Trawangan aka Gili T. There are 3 small islands that are known for beautiful snorkelling, beaches and backpackers.

Stressy start. Got to the ferry port and they were like where is your boarding pass ticket (we had an online reservation). Cue T having to run to a random restaurant, with a ferry guy, to get a little piece of paper!

Just made it in time for a 3.5 hour rolling boat trip. Very very rolly.

Got to Gili T. No cars are allowed on the island so we got a horse and cart to our hotel. Actually we started walking cos it was too expensive but then the kids insisted we got one halfway!

Hit the beach. It’s gorgeous here.

Tuesday 18th July

Snorkelling off the beach first thing. We chose this specific beach because of the calm waters and turtles. And it didn’t disappoint. You can literally swim with turtles while they eat the seaweed on the sea floor. They are v shallow, only about 2 feet away. Such an experience!

H was in HEAVEN – he built this ‘fort’ over several days. Because it was on top of a concrete block, it was never fully washed away by the sand. A sight to behold 🙂

Lunch, pool time in the afternoon.

Our fave ‘warung’ for lunch – a buffet style delicious squash curry, beef rendang etc

Wednesday 19th July

Same same as yesterday! If it ain’t broke…

Thursday 20th July

Snorkelling trip in the morning. We were spoilt at the Komodo islands. It was really rough and you couldn’t see much. We did see a really big turtle.

And there are these famous (man made) statues under the sea. A tourist gimmick I guess.

There were literally 30 people all flapping about above them. If you ever see pictures of someone in the statues, don’t be under any illusion. They would have fought to have their photo haha!

More turtle snorkelling. Lunch. Same same.

Whilst we didn’t love Gili T. I think Gili Air or Gili Meno would have been more our jam, we chose our spot because of the turtle point, so we are so pleased we did. That was really special just snorkelling off the beach and swimming with them. A once in a lifetime experience. F

For context, Gili T gets around 1 million visitors a year. The infrastructure is creaking. And as far as I can tell, most people use plastic bottles for their water. We managed to ask our local bar to use their large bottle. But I think that was just us trying our luck!

Friday 21st July

Travel back from Gili to Denpasar, before heading to Tanzania!
